Verbing drives me insane.
Verbing is what it is- literally. It's when you take a noun, like 'verb', or and adjective and make it a verb. Like 'verbing'.
This language phenomenon is most prevelant in Corporate America, which I am finding I must go back to for another year or two if I can, in order to put gas in the tank.
Bill Watterson is a true genius. Not onlyu is he a true genius, he's a visionary, and a truly committed artist, nto willing to sacrifice the integrity of his work for the sake of a few bucks here and there. I admire that.
You might not recognize the name, but you will recognize Calvin and Hobbes, his 'comic strip' about a trouble-making 6 year old boy and his stuffed tiger.
Calvin and Hobbes had this conversation way back in or around 1989:
C: I like to verb words.
H: What?
C: I take nouns and adjectives and use them as verbs. Remember when 'access' was a thing? Now it's something you DO. It got verbed. Verbing Weirds Language.
H: Maybe we can eventually make language a complete impediment to understanding.
This conversation works on so many levels that it can't be anything but genius. You see the topical layer, where it's just a kid and his tiger talking about stuff and it's funny on top. And there's a level that pokes fun at the people who think that altering the languages makes them creative . And there's a level that says it's not helping at all. And the subtlety doesn't end there, but you get the picture.
Yep, Bill Watterson is a genius. And I gotta go back to work.
