On the 'Master and Commander' movie soundtrack, there is a track from Yo Yo Ma, playing the Prelude from J.S. Bach's Suite No. 1 for solo Cello ( in G Major ) , BWV 1007 , on the Davidov cello. He's recorded this piece a few times before, but this one is the definitive version. Trust me on that one.
The Davidov is a Stradivari instrument. I can't remember when it was made but I know it's falling apart and doesn't travel well, and Ma has left it in the back of a taxi at least twice in the last ten years. He doesn't own it, but it is 'on loan for life' from its current owners, whom I can't remember the names of anyway.
I think this piece of music is perhaps my favorite Bach piece, and I am almost certain that I have never heard a better-sounding musical instrument than the Davidov, and Ma's performance in this particular recording is impeccable. The combination of instrument, composer, performer, and recording makes this a definite keeper.
I HIGHLY recommend it, even over the other recordings of Ma doing the same piece. Usually he overbows, plays too fast, and/or plays it too fast. This time , he got it right.
